Grand County's best-kept secret: fall. Here's your guide to pre-ski season events
The Real Estate Company - Mountain Division
Let's be honest -- most people think of Grand County as a ski destination and a summer playground. But the locals up here will tell you something different: fall is quietly, stubbornly, undeniably the best season in the valley. And right now, between the last High-Note Thursday of the summer and the first chair of ski season, we are sitting in the sweet spot.
The aspens are starting to turn. The trails have gone quiet. The golf courses are practically empty. And a lineup of fall events is keeping Grand County alive, warm, and worth the drive from the Front Range. Here's everything worth knowing.
In mid-September, the aspen trees of Grand County begin to change colors -- a spectrum that fades from emerald to lime to lemon to gold. The same can be said for the numerous cottonwoods that line the Colorado River from Lake Granby to Kremmling. Even the tundra gets in on the fall color act, with orange and red groundcover above treeline.
Peak leaf-peeping in Grand County typically runs from late September through mid-October -- and the views from Trail Ridge Road, the Kawuneeche Valley, and the forest roads above Fraser are the kind that make people pull over just to stand still for a minute. If you've never driven Trail Ridge Road in October with a thermos of coffee and nowhere to be, add it to the list immediately.
Granby Art in the Park
Polhamus Park, Granby
A free event featuring an artist competition, live music, art vendors, interactive art activities, food trucks, and a beer garden. Twelve artists are selected each year to participate in a People's Choice competition, painting approximately 8'x4' mural shapes over two days -- with final pieces mounted on Granby's long wall on Main Street. It's exactly the kind of community event that makes Granby feel like a real mountain town rather than just a highway pass-through. Free to attend and genuinely worth the stop.
Winter Park Film Festival
The Foundry, Fraser & venues throughout the valley
One of Colorado's emerging film festivals, set in the state's last hidden gem -- Winter Park. WPFF is dedicated to bringing high-end cinema to Grand County while fostering an environment where creatives and industry professionals can interact and network. The festival kicks off with a secret screening at KFFR Public Radio, followed by an opening night party at the Peggy Cinema Cabin on Pioneer Trail. Four days of independent films, filmmaker meet-and-greets, morning coffee conversations, and panel discussions that feel nothing like a big-city film festival -- which is exactly the point. Festival passes available at winterparkfilmfestival.com.
Sunday Music on the Patio
Granby Ranch Ski Resort
Live music every Sunday through September 27th at Granby Ranch. One of the most relaxed ways to spend a fall afternoon in Grand County -- great views, cold drinks, and local music before the ski season gets underway. Pair it with Sunday Brunch at Bluebird Bistro running the same dates.
Pumpkin Patch & Craft Fair at Sun Outdoors
Sun Outdoors Rocky Mountains, Granby
A full afternoon of fall fun from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. -- pumpkin patch, costume contest, face painting for the kids, cornhole tournament and craft fair featuring handmade items by local artisans for the adults, and horse-drawn hay rides with live music from 2 to 5 p.m. Complimentary sweets and two on-site dining outlets round out the afternoon. This one is a great reason to come up a weekend early before things get too Halloween-frantic.
Granby Trick-or-Treat Main Street
Downtown Granby
Destination Granby's annual Trick-or-Treat Main Street event runs from 4 to 6 p.m. -- ghosts, goblins, and ghouls of all ages collecting candy from downtown businesses and the Granby Visitor Center. This coincides with the final day of Granby's annual Scarecrow Contest, which runs October 11-25. Combine it with a visit to the new Nuche Village neighborhood for a full Granby fall afternoon.
Ghosts & Gourds Gathering -- Grand Lake
Grand Lake village boardwalk
Grand Lake hosts Ghosts & Gourds from 12 to 4 p.m. -- a pumpkin patch, children's costume contest, carnival games, crafts, and trick-or-treating down Grand Lake's charming wooden boardwalk at participating businesses. Grand Lake in late October is something special -- the lake is steel-blue and still, the aspens are bare but the peaks have their first dusting of early snow, and the boardwalk has that quiet, end-of-season magic that only locals usually get to experience. Pair it with dinner at a lakeside restaurant and a drive back through the Kawuneeche Valley at dusk.
